MiFi Devices or Mi-Fi hotspots importance, Difference between Mi-Fi and Wi-Fi

Mi-Fi hotspots are also known as Wi-Fi hotspots, portable hotspots, and mobile hotspots, they can be used to access the internet on multiple devices, Many devices support Mi-Fi hotspots such as laptops, smartphones, tablets, e-book readers, portable gaming devices, mp3 players, and more, they depend on cellular data to provide 3G or 4G internet access.

MiFi Devices or Mi-Fi hotspots

The Mi-Fi hotspot or the mobile hotspot is a portable, pocket-sized device that can be used to access the internet on many devices while you’re on the go, When you are out of your home or office, and you want to remain connected to the internet via your mobile data, Some people choose to connect their mobile devices to their laptops, this may not offer enough data bandwidth, where dedicated MiFi devices come in to play.

You can use Wi-Fi at home or at your work and if you are familiar with mobile broadband, Mobile broadband Wi-Fi or MiFi is essentially a blend of both these, MiFi devices are a little bigger than a mobile broadband USB modem, known as a dongle, MiFi devices are lightweight & portable, they come with a mobile broadband SIM, they can work on the same mobile broadband packages just like the dongle.

Although, unlike the dongle, the MiFi device should be charged by using a USB cable, Mi-Fi devices have a decent battery life similar to that of a fully charged laptop and they are a boon when you’re embarking on a long journey.

How the MiFi works

MiFi devices offer a few basic setup instructions that will run in no time, MiFi device should be first connected to your laptop/computer, where the device will install its own software if needed, When this is done and the unit is charged, depending on the model, you will see information on the MiFi device such as the signal strength, the connection established i.e. 3G, 4G, etc. and the amount of data that has been used.

MiFi devices broadcast Wi-Fi signals, so, it is very easy to connect, you can connect to a standard Wi-Fi router, You should locate the MiFi in the list of available connections and when you put the correct password, you will access the internet through your MiFi device.

Difference between Mi-Fi and Wi-Fi

Wi-Fi (aka. Wireless Fidelity) provides wireless connectivity to devices using fixed hotspots, Mi-Fi is a device, It is a mobile hotspot device that offers connectivity to other devices on the go via a process called tethering, The name “Wi-Fi” refers to the technology that connects multiple devices via wireless local area networking (WLAN) based on the IEEE 802.11 standards.

Wi-Fi has become a popular way to address devices that act as a Wi-Fi hotspot and create a WLAN using a router connected to an Internet Service Provider (ISP), then feed many devices such as mobile phones, tablets, and laptops with broadband wireless internet, The WiFi antenna signal strength the indicator icon or symbol has a dot at the bottom which symbolizes the WiFi source, Each wave which radiates upwards from it indicates higher strength or power of the WiFi coverage.

The term Mi-Fi can be understood as “Mobile WiFi“, Some people call it My WiFi or My-Fi, Mi-Fi is a brand name for a wireless device that acts as a mobile hotspot, MyFi can be used to create an ad-hoc WLAN network wherever you go, Smartphones, tablets & computers are mostly used to tether with such devices to connect to the Internet for wireless data transfer, Just like Wi-Fi connectivity to the Internet is used on computers and laptops.

MiFi devices are also used to tether with desktops and laptops for using mobile data service provided on a SIM card inserted in a Mi-Fi device, Rarely, an extra cost may be incurred on top of the mobile service plan to enable it to tether and thus use MiFi as it is intended to be used.

In the USA, Canada, and Mexico, Novatel Wireless is the holder of the “Mi-Fi” trademark while Hutchinson 3G owns it in the United Kingdom, Mi-Fi is used globally to informally address any device capable of providing a mobile hotspot for internet connectivity, Such devices, also known as Mi-Fi routers comprise of two main parts: a modem, and a Wi-Fi router.

The Wi-Fi router offers Wi-Fi connectivity while the modem presents connectivity to wireless devices based on wireless standards such as 3G or 4G or LTE, When connected to a cellular network, the Mi-Fi device can be connected to ten devices, The MiFi antenna signal strength indicator icon or symbol has four or five bars that progressively increase in height, This is the same as in mobile smartphones, Each consecutive bar symbolizes higher strength or power of the cellular or mobile coverage.

The broadband Internet Wi-Fi router will take care of your wireless internet needs in a fixed, stationary area, such as an office or a room, This is ideal because most ISPs offer unlimited data or data limits of hundreds of gigs which would be enough for most users, Mi-Fi routers work fine in stationary situations too, but they are not preferred due to lower wireless data transfer limits typical of mobile data plans.
